A Tour of Cobb County's Finest Schools

After starting to write a series of blog articles on swim/tennis communities in East Cobb County, I started to think about doing a another series of articles that would coinside nicely with those articles. I began to think about what criteria most people find to be most important when starting their initial home search. I have found that in my experience as REALTOR, the schools your family attends play a major factor on your decision to purchase a home in a certain area. For some people, that is all that matters to them and some may be looking at future resale value of the home as well. All in all the prestige that comes along with living in a good school district can weigh very heavily on a homebuyer's decision to purchase a home.
According to published facts by Cobb County School District, the Cobb County School District is the second largest school district in the State of Georgia and expects to educate more that 107,000 students for the 2008-2009 school year. Facts also state Cobb students consistently score above national average on norm-referenced tests, 80% of 2007 seniors took and scored a combined average score of 1534 on the SAT's, compared to the national average of 1511 and a state average of 1472.
Cobb currently has six Magnet Programs- Campbell High School, Kennesaw Mountain High School,North Cobb High School,Pebblebrook High School,South Cobb High School, and Wheeler High School. The 2008 Advanced Placement Certified Schools that encourage participation in advanced course work at the Demostration level are- Harrison High School,Kennesaw Mtn. High School, Lassiter High School, Osborne High School, Pope High School, Sprayberry High School, Walton High School, and Wheeler High School.
I have decided to start my focus on Distinguished schools located in East Cobb County and work my way around to the remainder of Cobb County's Distinguished Schools. In order to have received the Distinguished School status The school must have made adequate yearly progress for three or more consecutive years.
As a resident of Cobb County and a REALTOR that primarily works in the Cobb County area, if you are considering a move to the Atlanta- metro area, Cobb County is definitely the place to be! With the great schools and great location, what more can you ask for?
Stay tuned for the first school on my tour.... Lassiter High School!

If you are in the market for a new home and and your family includes a beloved four legged child like mine does, then you may want to Move to Marietta! If you live in or move to a home that does not have a fence and you have dogs, I have the perfect solution to releasing some of your furry friend's endless energy!
After my husband, Tim , and I moved to Marietta we decided to get a dog. We adopted a wonderful black lab from the Cobb County Animal Shelter that we named Lucky.

When Lucky turned 2 years old we decided to get him a sister. We adopted Dixie, a golden retreiver/ yellow lab mix we adopted from Pets to Be,a great group that does rescues for many different breeds of dogs.

With two adorable labs that have a ton of energy, we are constantly looking for a great place for them to go play and socialize with other dogs. It was great to hear of such a place so close to where we live!
Named Best Dog Park in Summer by Atlanta Magazine "One of the largest public parks in the metro area, Sweat Mountain is almost all shade, making this the perfect place for dogs in the summer-time - especially if they are easily overheated or especially furry." Atlanta Magazine - June 2007 |
Sweat Mountain Dog Park

Sweat Mountain Dog Park is Cobb County's first off-leash dog park that opened October 21, 2006. The dog park is located inside Sweat Mountain Park at 4346 Steinhaurer Road Marietta, GA. 30066 approximately 1 mile north of Lassiter High School . Sweat Mountain Dog Park sits on approximately 4 acres of land. This great off-leash dog park boasts two separate fully enclosed areas for your dogs to play and release all of their energy!
Large and Small Dog Runs

Sweat Mountain Dog Park has plenty of trees for shade (or watering!) and the ground cover is in wood chips, eliminating any potential muddy mess. The park has benches, water fountains and plenty of poop bags available! Don't worry, there are always plenty of puppies to play with.
My husband, Tim, and I love to bring Lucky and DIxie to Sweat Mountain Dog Park. It is a great place for them to run around and a nice place for us to enjoy our Saturday morning coffee socializing with other dog parents! It is a good way for your dogs to have fun and for you to meet your neighbors.
Cobb County has done a great job at keeping Sweat Mountain Dog Park a clean place for our dogs to play! I welcome more dog parks like this around Atlanta!

In 2006 the National Civic League named the city of Marietta one of the nations 10 best communities! The City of Marietta, it is located conveniently just outside the Perimeter and is just minutes away from I-75, Cobb Galleria , downtown Atlanta, and Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. My husband and business partner, Tim Cowan, and I live and work in this great All- American City! As proud residents of Marietta, we are so excited at the new growth that is developing around us!
As I was reading the quarterly issue of Blue Print, the official publication of the City of Marietta that is sent to all business owners and residents that live and/or work within the city limits, I decided I needed to share my enthusiasm on the upcoming improvements and growth that is coming to our great city!
Here are some of the highlights!
1. Progress Made on Roswell Street near Marietta Square
As stated in the latest issue of Blue Print, they are doing quite a bit of construction along Roswell Street. Along with improvements being made to the street, brick sidewalks, decorative lights, and landscaping, Roswell Street is the new home of the largest mixed-use developement, Meeting Park, near the Marietta Square.
"We're excited by the progress being made at Meeting Park" city manager Bill Bruton said. "The developement is a natural extension of our downtown and will provide housing that will add vitality to our existing restaurants and businesses on the Square."
Meeting Park is located just steps from the Square, and boasts townhomes that have a classic brownstone feel and range from 1,000- 3,000 square feet featuring a deck and garage. Meeting Park has great amenities such as optional elevators, rooftop gardens and a rooftop pool. As stated in Blue Print, the walkability of Meeting Park was a primary factor during the planning and design process of the community. " We believe that the simple act of walking in your neighborhood helps the environment and creates a stronger sense of community," said Bill Marsh, vice president of Winter Properties, which is developing the project. "We wanted to create an environmentally-responsible neighborhood that would feed into the existing fabric of Marietta."
Meeting Park is just one of the many great new developments that are coming to the City of Marietta. To see all the new housing developements coming to the City of Marietta visit http://move2marietta.com/newhousing.html
2. Improvements to the Powder Springs Street Area
Here are some of the major changes coming to Powder Springs Street
A. $150 million mixed-use developement announced for Powder Springs Street- located between Garrison and Sandtown Rd.
B. Several transportation improvements projects, such as streetscape improvements, and constuction of a westbound right turn lane on Gramling Street at Powder Springs Street are scheduled to begin this fall.
C. A new Wal-Mart Supercenter store planned, located on Powder Springs Street near Bellemeade Drive in the former Ingles grocery store shopping center.
3. Do you love Starbucks? Well, we have a new Starbucks location coming to Marietta.
You can get your caffenine fix at the new Starbucks Coffee Shop that will be located in the newly approved small retail center at 811 and 825 Church Street, north of Tower Rd. near Vann Street and WellStar Kennestone Hospital. Construction should begin late fall.
4. Master Planning Process for parks and recreation for the City of Marietta.
As stated in Blue Print, Marietta broke ground this fall on a redesign and renovation of Henry Memorial Park near Reynolds and Wright Streets off Powder Springs Street. The revitalization will include a large playground, pavilion, lighted walking track, basketball courts, new parking, and new landscaping when drought conditions improve.
5. Enjoying the Entertainment, Restaurants, and Shops at the Historic Marietta Square.
One the things that my husband, Tim, and I love the most about living in Marietta is the Marietta Square. The Square offers a great social scene, that encompasses great entertainment, restaurants, and shops. There is always something to do at the Square.
There is always a festival, concert, or some sort of event going on at the Square. Our favorite thing to do is go to the Friday Night Summer Concert Series that is held in the heart of the Marietta Square. Just bring a picnic and your favorite beverage and enjoy the evening lisitng to great music! This is great for families of all ages!

Another exciting developement that is under way is the renovation of The Strand Theatre.
As stated in Blue Print, final stages of demolition and the first stages of construction kicked off last summer. "This is the beginning of a 12-13 month process," said Earl Smith, chairman of the Friends of the Strand, the group raising funds to renovate the theatre. "We have set our sights on summer of 2008 for a very grand opening."
I am very excited to soon be able to add "catching a movie" to the list of many things I enjoy doing at the Square!
